Sleep deprivation experiment

DIdn't get to sleep until 6am, woke up at 10am. How does a penguin do on 4 hours of sleep? Interesting experiment, dear Watson. Didn't stop me from heading up to Wally World to get my medicines, then over to Harbor Freight Tools and Sears to start the work of replacing the tools that were in the toolbox that thieves stole (grrrrrr....). None of my core tools were in that toolbox (they were all with my Jeep that weekend), but lots of shit that just make working on cars and motorcycles more pleasant were in there, as well as some specialty tools that I don't even know whether I need'em anymore but it was nice having them in case I ever did need'em again (tools good! Ugh!). So over at Harbor Freight I got cheap replacements for the various specialty pliers (bent nose, needle nose, etc.) which when you need'em you need'em as well as various picks, scribes, tweezers, and other such implements of mass destruction, and oh yeah, my freakin' *air nozzles* were in that tool box too for attaching to my air compressor/air tank to do stuff like fill up tires and such via quick disconnect so I had to pick up a new air tool kit. Then over at Sears, I got replacements for the locking pliers and channel-loks that got stolen (I had the one of each that I use most often in the Jeep with me, well actually had two of the Vice-grips a tiny one and a regular size one, but the ones I didn't have do get occasional use when they're just the right tool for the job). Thus far the thief has set me back around $120, and I haven't even started on stuff like sheet metal shears and such that were in that toolbox, grrr...

So it appears that sleep deprivation makes me type run-on sentences and buy tools. Sigh. Guess it could be worse. Oh, yeah, what beats me is that I'm cutting back on my caffeine intake, just one cup in the morning for the past two days otherwise I can't safely navigate out of my front door and I'm going to cut that down to an 8oz cup rather than a 16oz mug (heh!) then to a 4oz cup at which point I should be able to kick the coffee habit entirely, but it doesn't seem to be helping the insomnia issue. And no, I don't use meth or crack, so don't bother telling me to quit them either :-). Oh yeah, my Macbook in clamshell mode hooked up to my widescreen 22" monitor is suhweet, but I can't find a picture browser that is as nice as gqview on Linux for the Mac. iPhoto is almost there, but is way too slow once you import thousands of photos into it and sucks up all the memory on the system (and remember I have two gigabytes of memory in my Macbook), not to mention that you have to import the photos into it in the first place, you can't just browse an arbitrary directory full of penguin porn for example unless you import it and who wants to have a 'penguin porn' category in their iPhoto left tab heh! So I guess I gotta fire up Xcode and do my first Aqua programming -- porting gqview to the native MacOS API. That oughtta be a trip :-).

Oh, for those of you who have multiple cats with multiple food bowls, do you find that your cats are picky about what order you fill the food bowls in? If I fi ll the food bowl by the wine rack before I fill the food bowl by the refrigerator, the furry beasties get all discombobulated. The Mighty Fang goes and starts eating out of the food bowl by the wine rack until Mencken shoves him away to grab a few bites, meantime I put food into the food bowl by the refrigerator and nobody's eating out of there. But if I put food into the food bowl by the refrigerator, TMF starts chowing down, while Mencken goes and waits by the one by the wine rack, I put food in there, and Mencken starts chowing down, then it's both kitties chowing down at the same time like it's supposed to be. Damned furry beasts simply do not tolerate any variation from their routine, it gets them all tangled up... hmm, okay, so sleep deprivation starts making penguins start talking about cats, photos, crack habits, and other stuff in a posting about insominia too. Babble babble babble...

Baby pictures

I have been trudging through my old photos today, putting them into iPhoto and sorting and categorizing them. While doing so I came across these photos of The Mighty Fang and Mencken shortly after they came home from the Arizona Humane Society. I was living in Scottsdale at the time in a funky 1950's concrete block ranch house just outside of downtown. Some of the other photos of the Arizona wildlife on the Squaw Peak Trail are rather more interesting (this penguin does admire the sight of hot sweaty well-buffed wildlife, yessiree!) but that's another posting :-). The Mighty Fang is about 8 months old at this time and considerably smaller than he is today. Mencken is about 4 years old and was pulled out of a dumpster where he was foraging for food. Mencken spent about 2 weeks lurking under my bed, coming out only at night or when I was away for food and water and litter box duty, before he decided I was safe and came out while I was around, at which point I couldn't go anywhere without him following me and meowing asking for me to sit down so he could jump on my lap and purr. I decided he needed companionship. TMF -- a playful teenage kitten at the time -- was the result. TMF didn't hide under the bed. He practically mugged me -- and Mencken, who he drove nuts by alternately grooming Mencken and then, during a grooming session, suddenly deciding to wrestle with him. This second photo is about six months later, after TMF got somewhat bigger (he's now bigger than Mencken, he was about the same size as Mencken at the time of the photo). Neither of these photos are posed, but both are the result of TMF following Mencken around and doing whatever Mencken was doing. In the first photo, Mencken went to sleep on my futon (much younger and bluer at the time, I need a new futon cover!), and TMF followed. In the second photo, I had a cat lure on a string and had lured them on top of the box while catfishing, and now they're looking down at the cat lure preparing to pounce on it. But at least Mencken quit following me around meowing at me. He was too busy trying to avoid being groomed by TMF, which is why he's had an irritated look on his furry face ever since...

CRASH! Thunk!

So I just put together one of those white bookshelves from Ikea, and turned around and started clearing a spot for it. Then I hear a CRASH! I turn around and... The Mighty Fang had launched himself off the top of the kitchen counter (one of those wrap-around bar type counters) to jump on top of the new bookshelf unit to investigate, and of course since there were no books in it to stabilize it, it smashed right over into the stereo speaker and lamp on the "entertainment center". The Mighty Fang was clinging for dear life to the top shelf of the thing with his front paws, his back paws were dangling over thin air, and as I watched he slid down and went "thunk!" onto the carpet.

Total damage: I had to nail the back panels back on, they popped out when they smashed into the stereo speaker. The lamp was fine when I retrieved it from behind the stereo. A chunk of the sawdust-board was knocked out of one of the side panels, but you can barely see it from the outside, and I'll put that up against the wall in the corner to make it harder to see. All in all, the biggest damage was to The Mighty Fang's dignity. He sulked off and went to sleep on my bed.

Binary Two

Black, white. Left, right. 0, 1. Binary.

For the person who said that I needed to get the cats their own bed: They have their very own futon, covered in fur (well, used to be blue denim, now it's pretty much fur). Needless to say, whenever I go into my bedroom to go to bed, they follow me in there and pretty much take over the place. You can see how much of the futon they take up. My guys are *BIG*!

That's a Walton C pennywhistle and a Generation Bb whistle, btw. And of course the case to my camera. The kitties run when I start tootling on the D whistle, but don't seem to mind the lower whistles. Hmm. Anyhow, thus far the Walton C, Walton Mellow D, and Generation Bb are my favorites, they're easy to control and in tune. And none of them are expensive -- all were purchased for under $10 apiece. As far as musical hobbies go, this definitely is one of the less expensive ones!

Mostly been busy with my Mac, trying to get Parallels set up so I can run my mapping software (which alas does not run under MacOS). Turns out that the store I bought it from at the time I bought my Mac was selling an old version, and I'm automatically eligible to upgrade to the new version, all I have to do is mail them a copy of my receipt along with a piece of paper they generated for me on their web site, then they'll email me the info needed to upgrade for free. After they get around to it. Whenever. Like, after they're finished surfing or climbing Mount Whitney or whatever they're doing other than supporting their customers (hey, anybody who is registering an old version in late June when the new version was released in early April obviously is entitled to the new version, but what do I know, I only have 25 years in the bizness and obviously they have more years, right?). Huh. Well, since I'm legally entitled to the new version according to their very own web site, I went on my favorite pirate site (hey, I'm in the computer security biz, you think I don't know where those guys live?) and got a key for the new one along with where to download it (off of the Parallels site!) and went ahead and installed it. When I get the new key back from the Parallels guys, well, then that'll just be gravy...

Binary code

Black, white. Left, right. This is a queen sized bed that these guys are taking up. Where am I supposed to sleep? Oh yeah, that's right, I'm supposed to sleep in that itsy bit between them.

Methinks I need a *KING* sized bed...

Friday Cat Blogging: Lump

Here is why The Mighty Fang, despite his best efforts, isn't much of a lap cat. This is him curled as tight and compact as he'll go. Needless to say, on any normal-sized lap he's kind of sagging off the sides. He still tries, though -- he'll jump on your lap and settle down and purr. After a while, though, it becomes obvious to him that he just doesn't fit, and he jumps off and sulks a while.

The Mighty Fang chows down

Here is the Mighty Fang engaging in his favorite habit. Yes, those are little mostly-crunched nuggets of kitty kibble surrounding his food bowl, TMF is a messy eater requiring me to sweep up the kitchen every day. Note also the creative use of the wine rack by a non-wine-drinking penguin (heh!), and the fact that each of those squares is 1 foot square, meaning that TMF is about 2 feet long from the tip of his nose to the base of his tail (3 feet long if you include the tail). That's why he dwarfs his food bowl so badly. Funny, he doesn't look that big if you're just looking at him...

BTW, the reason I was at Safeway last night and fell prey to the double-chocolate muffins was because TMF had snarfed down the last of the kitty kibble. When that happens I do not play around, I go out and get more kitty kibble. This penguin values his life!

More light blogging

The carpet people didn't show yesterday. GRRR! In retaliation I pulled out my little Hoover Steamvac V and gave the worst spots a quick shampoo. Better. But not as good as those big truck-mounted machines can do, my little Steamvac does a lot better than the Bissel I once had (it better, as much as it cost me!) but simply cannot heat the water up as hot, shoot it as deep into the carpet, or suck it up as well as one of those big mothers. Not to mention it's a PITA, one tank of water will basically do a 6' by 6' square which was six tanks of water for my living and dining area.

For those wondering what key my whistles are in, they're all in the key of D. That's pretty much the "standard" key that all the whistle tutorials and songbooks are written for, though of course you can play the songs in any key if you're just playing for yourself. Minstrel Boy mentions a tiny high G whistle. Looking at the Clarke web site they just sell D and C. Walton's made one once, but looks like they just make D and C too. Generation makes a high G as well as a bunch of others, and a lot of professionals used them for some time, but finding a "good" Generation is a chore. So anyhow, I'll probably get a C and a Bb just to round out my whistle collection, but looks like a high G isn't going to be in there.

Finally, regarding why I ended up nose-to-nose with Mencken when my furry alarm clock woke me up yesterday, you may have had trouble figuring out how that could be. But this photo should make it a bit more clear. This is the scene I wake up to every morning, except with me under the covers, of course... clicky clicky to embiggen: Btw, the trashcans are up on the nightstands because I had just vacuumed in preparation for the carpet people coming (grrrr!)...

Grrr furry alarm clock redux...

So it's around 6:30am. The sun is shining outside. The alarm is set for 7:30. I roll over to my right and I'm face to face with Mencken, who is sleeping next to my pillow like he usually does. I roll over on my back, repelled in my sleep by the cold nose and sharp fang. The Mighty Fang decides this means it's time to wake me up to feed him again because he already ate a full day's food (given to him at 8pm last night), and jumps on my chest and starts patting my face with half-extended claws. I growl, no, you are NOT getting any food right now you fat thing! and get up and go use the bathroom and then go back to bed and sleep on my *left* side for the remainder of the time until my alarm goes off.

So I leave you with this catpile to keep you happy on this day of light blogging, since I'm about to pack up my laptop to leave for work... -- Badtux the Cat-owned Penguin

Bonus cat blogging

Because I couldn't do my catblogging yesterday, I give you this bonus picture of The Mighty Fang taking a nap.

Doing better with the recorder. Completely ignoring the fingering chart sent with the thing. I have a very good ear, and can hear when a note I'm playing is off key (or simply the wrong note) and modify my fingering to match. I can now play some simple tunes like "I Am Your Sunshine" on the thing. Eagerly awaiting my Irish whistles though, because I absolutely *hate* the sound of this thing (sounds like a plastic whistle - eh, who woulda thunk?!).

I'm not fat, I'm just big-boned

Yeah right, cat. You aren't big boned. Look at those spindly little rear paws on ya. You're fat. And me saying that doesn't make me some mysogonist anti-feminist penguin either, since you're male, so you can just quit whining about how I'm being mean... you're sixteen pounds of fat cat, cat!

Sorry about missing my cat blogging yesterday. Work intervened, and I didn't get home until around 9pm because I needed to get some test cases working over the weekend. As I noted earlier, I recently got a gigantic pay increase and new responsibilities at work and while it's not the sort of environment where I'll be working more than 45 hours a week in a typical week, when stuff needs doing it needs doing.

Hmm, you can see two of my colorful new throw rugs/runners that I found, one at Target and one at Ikea (evil! evil! evil! went in for one thing, came out with $100 of other things including the most luxurious set of sheets that was $45 all by itself!). Hairball season is pretty much over, and the carpet cleaners are coming next week to shampoo my carpets to get the cat yakk out, then I am going to place these things in all the most popular places for my cats to yakk so that hopefully they'll catch the yakk during the fall hairball season when they shed their summer coats and put on their winter coats. I wish I could train them to yakk into their litter box. Sigh. Anyhow, my iceberg is getting more colorful, you'll need sunglasses if it gets any brighter!

Furry alarm clocks

So something wakes me up about 7:10AM. F***, it's a g**d*** Saturday, I flip the alarm to wake me up at 8:30AM and roll over and try to go to sleep. Vaguely I hear the thunder of little cat feet. Cats chasing each other again doing their morning exercises, I suppose...

CRASH!

Huh? What was that?! I try to roll back over and go to sleep, but then I hear... CLICK CLACK CLICK CLACK CLICK CLACK ...

Oh f***. Fur-bearin' varmints have knocked the floor fan over. I groan and get out of bed and yeppers, the throw rug that was under it is in a pile, my desk chair that was next to it is several feet away where it got flung probably by kitties jumping onto it then off of it at high rates of speed, and the fan is on its face under my computer desk. So I pick it up and go searching for the culprit... "It wasn't me! I was busy drinking from the toilet! And if I did do it, I was drunk!". Uh. Ohhhkay... "Not me! I was busy, uhm, oh yeah, playing the guitar!"

Gah. You're not supposed to be playing my guitar either, silly kitty!

Oh well. I'm awake. Even though that's a tragedy at 7:30AM on a Saturday morning. Frickin' furry alarm clocks!

I probably should have ate the cat food

In my search for the perfect can to use to make the perfect alcohol stove, I brought home two cans of cat food, a can of "Deviled Chicken Spread", and a can of "Potted Meat Product".

Having fed the cats the cat food and seen them noisily guzzle it down, then subjected my gullet to the "meat product", I have to say the cat food looked and smelled a lot more appetizing. The cats seem to agree too. When I put the leftovers down after making sandwiches, they walked over, sniffed, turned up their noses, and ignored it from thence onwards.

Yeah, maybe I shoulda ate the cat food, and given the "meat product" to the kitties. On the other hand, I have to sleep tonight, which might be hard with irate kitties yowling at me that I ate the good shit and gave them the crap...

Aggressive grooming

The Mighty Fang is a vicious kitty. When confronted with another cat, he viciously attacks said other cat with... the tongue of mass fur grooming. Here the irascible Mencken was just trying to catch a few rays from the sun, and the Mighty Fang came up to him and started... grooming him. And when he tried to wiggle away from that pink tongue of raspy hair displacement, The Mighty Fang put his paw up and held his head steady. Oooh, the Mighty Fang is just so mean!

Finally Mencken had enough of that "grooming" stuff: He shoved TMF away and is threatening to shred TMF with his uplifted paw. Meanwhile, TMF is just sitting there saying, "who, me?" like nothing had happened...

Yeah, trying to raise my cat blogging hit count because having those other people getting more hits than these sweet kitties is... ick. Just ick.

Mencken is not happy...

Looking at my web hosting statistics and adding up "cat cats kitty kitties" then looking at "coulter", nude ann coulter naked is getting almost as many Google hits as the pussies are. michelle malkin nude naked is way behind, nobody wants to see michelle malkin (yay!). Add the two together, though, and they're only a dozen hits behind Mencken and the Mighty Fang...

Mencken asks, "What is wrong with people?" Then he put his head down and put his paw over his eyes and say "meh, go away" and went back to sleep.

Cats are more popular than Coulter

Yes, folks, I just looked at my statistics for the month of March so far, and the words "cat" or "cats" in search terms are *TWICE* as popular as the word "coulter" in search terms, naked or not! Ann Coulter naked is getting five times more hits than Michelle Malkin naked (poor Michelle, nobody loves her!), but my cats are twice as popular as either of them.

Although, I must say I do have some questions. Okay, so The Mighty Fang is black, and big. But he's a fluffball, seriously, the biggest danger he is to anybody is to rub them to death while purring, why does Google send people here for the search term "scary black cat", if you want a scary cat this is a scary cat! And for the guy asking the question, "are cats immune to scorpion venom", uhm, sorry I couldn't answer your question, dude. The Minstrel Boy notes that scorpions are immune to scorpion venom, but that doesn't answer your question. And come on. My cats are NOT funny looking! Why did so many people come here looking for "funny looking cats"?! Sheesh. No respect, no respect I say! My cats are handsome cats. Fine, upstanding dignified cats. Not funny looking! Though, okay, they can be a bit clingy...

Friday Guest Cat Blogging

Mencken and The Mighty Fang went on strike this week. I pulled out my camera and tried to take a picture of Mencken on top of the kitchen cabinets, but a) he started running like a scalded cat to get away from my evil camera, and b) I forgot to put a memory card into the camera before I started trying to get cat pictures, so the camera just started flashing its lights at me anyhow. Once I found a memory card and inserted it, Mencken was gone. I don't know where, but gone. And The Mighty Fang had seen fit to abscond also, leaving me standing in the middle of my apartment with a camera but no cats to photograph. Maybe they didn't like getting poked with needles at the kitty doctor and are punishing me. Hmm.

So instead, I have a guest cat, Fred The Cat, the cat that owns Pissed Off Patricia. Fred is a very wise and dignified cat. Read Fred's comparison of conditions for veterans at Walter Reed with the conditions for cats at Little Feet Veterinary Hospital. Sadly, it appears that cats get better care than wounded veterans... what does that say about our national priorities?

Of course, I'm sure Fred, Fang, and Mencken would all agree that cats are better than people thus it is only right that cats should get better medical care. But they're cats. They have brains the size of walnuts. People are supposed to be smarter than that -- but apparently aren't. Alas.

Carrying my kitties to the kitty doctor

Wish me luck. If you don't hear from me, watch for news reports of a Jeep found mysteriously sitting by the side of the road with two very satisfied looking cats and a lot of penguin feathers.

Back from backpacking

How does a penguin hike, you ask? Well, in this case, thanks to New Balance trail runners. New Balance makes shoes in a bunch of different widths, including "flipper feet wide".

Here is this penguin's portable iceberg, nicely appointed (click for bigger pic):

Now, it occurs to this penguin that he has been somewhat remiss in his cat blogging. Indeed, both the curmudgeonly Mencken and the mighty Fang have bitterly complained that this penguin is ignoring them in favor of those nasty "politician" people. Thus I shall rectify that problem: Hmm. That doesn't look like a cat. Let's try that again: Darn, that doesn't look like a cat either! Let me try this one last time...

Ah yes... the curmudgeonly Mencken simply cannot maintain his usual disdainful posture when there's an ear-rub to be found...

And that is all from my iceberg for this Sunday. Hope your weekend was as pleasant as mine!
